A request from Peter Ellis

Bill Prowse, a founding member of our club drove an Elfin 300 sports car at the inaugural Golden Mile hillclimb at Ararat, winning his class with a single pass in the Ford BDA engine machine. This is the only car Bill ever competed in which he doesn’t have a photo of. The Elfin was a distinctive red “CanAm”styled car so if you know of photos from this event, please call Peter Ellis on 0419002007. Bill raced at the Ballarat Airport in 1947 and continues competition to this day in historic events. He would be thrilled if you could help to literally complete the picture.

Sports Sub Committee News

State Round Hillclimb – Mt Leura- 10th & 11th April. CDC Round 1

This important event is fast approaching and entries are coming in quickly. Please remember it is the first round of our Club Drivers Championship. Please by all means enter if you are doing the CDC . If however Hillclimbs aren’t your driving fancy but you can help by sitting on one of the corners for either or both of the 2 days please speak to Rod Hall 53313546 or 0438313546. We will feed you during the day and keep you busy so you don’t go to sleep. You will also see the cars up close so what more could you ask. It’s the weekend after Easter so please if possible make contact before Easter but anytime is OK. This will be one of a reduced number of major events that help our coffers this year so your assistance would be greatly appreciated. If you would like to have your
CAMS officials licence upgraded at this event whilst doing your duty please talk to Rod before hand so we can get the paperwork in hand. Supp Regs and entry forms for this event are on both BLCC and Vic Hillclimb websites. Entries close on the 31st March because of Easter shutting down the postal system.

Autocross Survey

Thank you to all those who responded to our recent survey about the preferred time to run Autocrosses. Thanks to Barney Haddon for his work in distributing the survey over the Challenge weekend and encouraging you to respond The results are now in. Daytime scored 34 votes, with Day/Night a close second on 22 votes with night-time a very distant third on 7 votes. The preferred day was Sunday with 36 votes with Saturday coming in second on 23 votes. To this end the next Autocross will by on Sunday 2nd May and will be a daytime event. Please show your support by entering this event to support the poll numbers above. VOTE WITH YOUR FEET PLEASE by entering.

We will be considering the responses to the question why the recent Autocross was poorly patronised at our next few meetings in hope that we may be able to address some of the issues. Please note that the event wasn’t cancelled but postponed. We will try to squeeze it back into the calendar at our next meeting

New Scoring Team

Rob Schenk has taken on the scoring of 3 of our series on a trial basis. Rob will score the Autocross, Motorkhana and Club Drivers
Championship series. Rod Hall will be responsible for scoring the Club Trials Championship. If you go to one of the away events
that are not run by BLCC can you endeavour to make sure Rob or Rod get the respective results to allow them to score these series.

Water and the Autocross Track

The Good Lord provided us with some handy moisture over the Challenge of Clubs weekend interspersed with some not so handy bolts of lightning which meant we didn’t need to water the Autocross track.

Please be advised that an Autocross that uses the water truck like we used to (before the water restrictions) can empty one of our tanks so we don’t have an infinite supply.

We are however prepared to run events during the day whilst we can with water available. If someone has a quick and easy way to get water to the track then please talk to us.

We have some generous offers of water in tanks and dams but have a bit of a problem getting it to the
track. The truck holds approx 4000 litres which is about 4 tonnes so its not a simple task getting it to the track. A registered truck
with or without a big tank would be really useful.(We have access to 4 1000 litre containers if you have the truck).

Tag Team Directors

Please be advised that CAMS have relaxed the requirements for the organising team when we are running events. We can now name two people as the Clerk of Course and allow both of them to compete as long as they are not both driving simultaneously. Ben McKee, Darren Wythe, Keith McElroy and Damian Faulkner have all run events under this system recently. We can also relieve the Chief Scrutineer of his duties and also allow him/her to compete after the scrutiny job is done. The only person who cant compete is the Steward. This only pertains to Club and Multi-club events and does not pertain to higher level events like State Championships.

So apart from the State round Hillclimb at Mt Leura and the Begonia Rally VRC round we can now use this system to allow you all to compete and organise/run our events. Please contact a Committee member or Sports Sub committee member if you are interested. First available event is the Autocross on 2nd May. Get in quick and beat the rush.

After a short absence the BLCC Web site is back and hosted on a new server. The committee wish to apologize for any inconvenience this outage may have caused.

Club Memorabilia

As the club celebrates its 60th year, we are
appealing to all members to look around
your home, in all the storage places you
have forgotten, for club memorabilia.
Old photographs, programs, results, minutes,
passes, badges, shield or trophies, apparel or
anything else you think might be interesting.
These items will help to tell the story of the
club. Please hand the items to the President or a

Sponsorship

Mick Goossens is the sponsorship administrator as this has been shown to be a necessary position. It is now necessary to run your sponsorship thoughts past Mick before approaching potential sponsors. This will solve the problem of different members calling on the same businesses regularly.

Vale Peter Jacobs

The President and members of the Ballarat Light Car Club offer their heartfelt condolences to Wendy, Vicki, Eleanor and family on the passing of Peter on 31st march, 2009.

Peter, former BLCC Committee member and Secretary, was a vibrant, intelligent and enthusiastic member of the Club, with a special concern for younger members. His generosity and friendliness towards fellow members will be sadly missed but never forgotten and his spirit will live on in the activities of the club.

Bush fire Appeal Car Show

A very successful car show was held at the City Oval on Sunday 1st March. This show was a combined effort by the car clubs of Ballarat and a very large number of vehicles were on display. The range of machinery was very diverse; race and rally cars, display cars, vintage and classic cars, hot rods, muscle cars, dragsters and all sorts of interesting road cars. Live bands and sausage sizzles added to the atmosphere of the day. Quite a good crowd seemed to be in attendance, but I have not heard the financial result of the day. The BLCC contingent contributed more than 30 cars and we played our part well. Thanks to Frank Devine, John Bourke and Trevor Ryan for willingness to organise and to all members who took part.
Editor

Philip Coghlan

The BLCC family is saddened by the passing of Philip Coghlan, Life Member, Past President and very active and dedicated member in every aspect of Club life. At the Celebration of the Life of Philip at St Patrick’s Cathedral the packed congregation were privileged to hear, as part of the tributes, a most moving tribute from Philip’s sons Richard and Stephen. Richard and Stephen spoke alternately.
(Editor).

This Month the Meeting...

...will not be the Annual Trophy Night as previously advertised.
The Committee has postponed this night until April. Book your
tickets with Frank Devine as previously arranged.

Challange of clubs Trial Postponed

The Directing team are formally announcing that the 2009 Challenge
of Clubs Trial is Postponed.

Further discussions with the NCCA committee and then the VRAP will
determine whether the event will be rescheduled as a standalone
event or Cancelled.

The fire in the Muskvale area which started yesterday and grew
overnight has not yet impacted the rally route. However taking into
account the potential damage to the Rally Community if we did
compete, whether an incident occurred or not, is in our view too
great.
