The club is celebrating 60 years of motor sport activity and the past president is documenting its history.“We know there are people out there with club memorabilia and information which will help us,” McKenzie said.“We expect lots of it is tucked away in back rooms and sheds, but its invaluable to us right now.”“We would love to be able to borrow material for this project,”.
McKenzie said the organisation was one of the oldest and most respected car clubs in Australia. It was originally a branch of the Light Car Club of Australia, but became a separate entity about 20 years ago. Since 1949 the club has been active in many areas of motor sport.
In 1961 it hosted grand prix cars at Ballarat Airport, with Englishman Graham Hill’s BRM among the starters. Hill went on to win two world F1 championships.
McKenzie said that, with an abundance of nearby forests, rallying had been central to the club’s activity the Begonia Rally for instance, is one of the longest-running championship rallies in Australia.
The club was also responsible for the BP Desert rallies at Hattah in the 1970s, which grew to be the biggest off-road event in the world, featuring over 500 motorcycles and 250 cars. It also developed the Golden Mile hill climb at Ararat the longest, fastest hill climb in Australia.
McKenzie is looking for any material that would help write the club history. He can be contacted on 0408 545 554 or Peter Ellis on 0419 002 007.
Begonia Parade 2010
With 2010 marking the 60th anniversary of the formation of Ballarat Light car club (formally the Light Car Club of Australia, Ballarat branch) to celebrate we attempted to present a car from each decade of the clubs existence at this year’s Begonia parade.
